I can’t even explain how close I was to excluding this song from the EP, but when I listened to the album without it, the journey felt far too short and (even worse) terribly depressing. To rectify the situation, I slapped this upbeat number in the middle of everything, which granted the release a much needed center lift, now easier to digest for your little tummy. So in that regard, it's almost the saviour of the whole project, and I’m stoked about the decision.
The writing itself came from my little sister. Lost for inspiration, I turned to her for guidance, and her instructions were to put together something “about the nighttime, using the words ‘shadow’, ‘orange’, and ‘rats’, in the style of the Dresden Dolls.” This is that, apparently.
lyrics
VERSE 1
I get more afraid of the night as I get older
The orange sun dies and my room becomes a shadow
The rat family gnash their teeth underneath my bed
They want me dead
They kiss each other passionately just to spite me
CHORUS 1
And the roof creeks cos there’s a rapist in my attic
The fridge hums out my full name on repeat
There’s a pain in my abdomen that’s probably cancer
And I’ve completely forgotten how to fall asleep
VERSE 2
I get more afraid of the night as I get older
The orange sun dies and my room becomes a shadow
The scarecrow in my cupboard makes sexual gestures
He wants to fuck me
On my dirty washing, it’s too late to close the door
CHORUS 2
And the roof creeks cos there’s a rapist in my attic
The phone rings out my full name on repeat
There’s a pain in my abdomen that’s probably cancer
And I’ve completely forgotten how to fall asleep
Yeah, I’ve completely forgotten how to fall asleep
Yeah, I’ve completely forgotten how to fall asleep
